Ben Lizon, BMus
Piano
Ben Lizon is a Waterloo-based pianist and teacher, with special interests in improvisation-based pedagogy and partimento. He received a Bachelor’s degree of music in Piano Performance at Wilfrid Laurier University studying with Marnie Van Weelden. At Laurier: he performed at every single Laurier Keyboard Noon Hour concert; he started and ran a successful piano performance club – WLU Piano Forum; he received numerous piano performance scholarships; he was the team lead for Laurier’s Music Theory SI Program; and he continually pushed himself in what it means to be a musician.
As a teacher, Ben provides students with a strong theoretical and technical foundation, and most importantly, a love and appreciation of music. He allows students to play an active role in their education, guiding their unique journey as individuals. Nonetheless, Ben ensures all of his students have at least a rudimentary understanding of improvisation at the piano, as well as a strong sense of pulse. Ben hopes to later pursue graduate studies in music theory and performance. His dream is to eventually teach studio piano, piano literature, and music theory courses at a small university (ideally somewhere near some good crown land camping).
